Remodelling
I find remodeling an inherited piece of jewellery one of the most rewarding experiences of being a jeweller, and there are many facets to it. The client may wish to have a vintage piece refurbished with damaged metal and stones replaced, they way wish to have it renovated and modernized, or completely redone. Often, I am called on to change a ring’s design, as the new wearer has different shaped hands and the ring does not suit or fit them.
In this case, the client came to me with a ring she had inherited from her grandmother. She was about to get married, and seeing as though her grandmother had played an active part in her upbringing, she thought it appropriate to use the ring as her wedding ring. The only problem was that she didn’t like the old fashioned solitaire style at all.
She had looked around at what she liked, and after some quick sketching we decided on something that she was keen on. She didn’t like yellow gold, but wanted something a little unusual, maybe two-tone .Uncertain about any side-stones, but definite about the half carat old-cut diamond, we decided to go ahead with the design to semi- completed, and then a further consultation to consider the side treatment.
The ring was made using 18karat white and rose gold. After being shown the possible options, the client decided to use further elements from her grandmother's ring. The 'leaves' that you see either side of the main stone existed on the original ring, only they were concave, and had to be re-shaped to a convex profile to suit the new ring. The ring was then finished and set, with the result being extremely satisfying to both the customer and the jeweller alike.
